Instructional Strategy

The teacher will be using the flipped classroom method by uploading a pre-recorded Branches of the U.S. Government - Educational Social Studies Video for Elementary Students & Kids - YouTube link and Branches of Government Quiz – Journeyperson Level (gpo.gov) to the Classroom Calendar for students to review and test themselves over the content at home. Using the flipped classroom instructional strategy supports educators by allowing more time in the classroom to reinforce the learning objective versus teaching the standard, reinforcing, and assessing. Flipped classroom instructional strategy advances student learning by engaging the students in educational technology to capture their attention and allow them additional time in the classroom to collaborate on peer or group tasks. In addition, flipped classroom supports student learning by providing the lesson beforehand, so students can learn at their own pace.

Formative Assessment Strategy

The teacher will use clicker technology as a formative assessment. Clicker technology is a quick and simple way to assess students learning and modify teaching correspondingly. The clicker formative assessment will consist of True/ False and multiple-choice questions relevant to the three branches of the U.S. government. All students will be given a clicker that is linked to their name in order to monitor progress and present data to the teacher. This technology will register every student’s answer and provide the educator with immediate data regarding student learning. Clicker Technology supports educators by delivering real-time feedback on the student’s understanding and allows the teacher to adjust, review, or extend instruction accordingly. For example, if the data results indicate a trend of students misunderstanding the factors of the Judicial branch, the teacher can review the information, resolve the issue, and retest the adjusted content. Clicker technology supports student learning by allowing students to track their own progress and monitor their experience. This assessment supports students by providing them with access to their improvements and what they still require assistance with. Students can use this tool to determine their strengths and weaknesses in the content to influence their learning.

Summative Assessment Strategy

The teacher will use Google Quiz/Forms technology for the summative assessment. The Google Quiz/Form offers a free, easy-to-use, customizable logic branching document to use however the teacher deems appropriate for student learning. Once the Quiz is completed, the teacher can see the results and analyze the data from any Smart device. Google Quiz/Forms tool supports teachers by empowering them with configurable technology that can be shaped however they desire. The teacher can create more in-depth logic branching questions involving multiple-choice, true/false, short answers, or checkboxes that will differentiate the assessment by how students answer the questions.

Logic branching questions will differentiate the assessment by sending the students to a different question based on how they responded to the previous question. This services the teacher by allowing the teacher to determine what information is on the assessment and how the students will respond to the material. The teacher can create a custom assessment that allows each student to demonstrate their knowledge and skills over the three branches of the government. The Google Quiz/Form reinforces student learning by providing logical branching questions that strategize the student’s next question based on the response to the previous question. This reinforces student learning by differentiating their assessment based on their abilities and needs.

The data collected by the Google summative assessment will monitor student learning by indicating results in graph form to exhibit trends. The teacher will evaluate the data and determine if the students have met the objective of the standard. If not, the teacher can extend the objective and adjust previous instruction to increase student learning results.

In addition, the data collected from the formative and summative assessment will be composed in the teacher’s virtual electronic gradebook to track student learning gains. The virtual electronic gradebook helps inform trends, record results, and motivate student learning. The electronic gradebook technology is automatic, user-friendly, and easily accessible. The virtual electronic gradebook reports progress based on curriculum-specific standards. The combined formative and summative assessment data will signal to the teacher if students meet or fail the curriculum standard. With the data collected, the teacher can adjust or extend the curriculum-specific standard to increase student learning if needed.
